Market Overview
Universal Serial Bus (USB) is an industry-standard that enables data transmission and supply of electricity across many types of electronic devices. It defines its architecture, particularly its material interface, and protocols for communication for data transfer and energy transfer to and from hosts, such as personal computers, to and from peripheral devices. USB charging connections have become an essential component of modern automobile infotainment systems. Passengers are becoming more accustomed to using their vehicle's electrical system to both charge their cellphones or other portable devices and use those devices for a range of vehicle information and entertainment activities. USB charging ports must meet a range of system criteria in terms of power, data transfer, and robustness in the face of real-world hazardous occurrences to support both power and data capabilities, including enabling adaptability in rapidly changing portable device markets. The growing number of electric vehicles (EVs) and the necessity for effective in-car charging options fuel the market's growth. The incorporation of USB power delivery systems into electric vehicles promotes growing trends including vehicle-to-grid (V2G) communication and smart charging, which enable bidirectional energy flow between the vehicle and the grid, resulting in increased flexibility and sustainability. The market for automotive USB power delivery systems will see additional growth during the previously mentioned forecast period due to rising R&D activity, modernization of production methods, rising advances in technology, and rising demand from new markets.
Beaverton May 26, 2021 - The USB Promoter Group disclosed the publication of the USB Power Delivery (USB PD) Revision 3.1 specification, a significant improvement that allows for the delivery of up to 240W of power over the USB Type-C cable and socket. Before this upgrade, USB PD was restricted to 100W using a 20V solution with USB Type-C cables rated at 5A. The USB Type-C specification has also been updated with Release 2.1 to define 240W cable requirements, and the improved USB PD protocol and energy source definition broadens USB PD's effectiveness to a wide range of devices where 100W was previously inadequate.
