Market Overview

Blood collection is defined as the obtaining of blood from a patient or donor for various medical purposes including diagnostic tests, transfusions, and research. It usually involves using a needle to pierce a vein, usually in the arm, and letting the blood flow via carefully sterile tubes or containers. The collected blood is subsequently processed and analyzed to offer information about a person's health, such as disease diagnosis, condition monitoring, and blood type determination. Blood can be collected at hospitals, clinics, or specialist blood donation centers. It is applied in the detection of health conditions, management of chronic diseases, safe blood transfusion, sustaining scientific studies, and collection of blood donations.

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) report in June 2023, 118.5 million blood donations were collected globally, with 40% in high-income countries. The majority of blood transfusions are given to over 60-year-olds in high-income countries. The blood donation rate varies across different income levels, with high-income countries having the highest rate at 31.5 donations, followed by upper-middle-income countries at 16.4, lower-middle-income countries at 6.6, and low-income countries at 5.0. From 2008 to 2018, voluntary unpaid blood donations increased by 10.7 million. 79 countries rely on voluntary unpaid blood donors for over 90% of their blood supply, while 54 countries rely on family/replacement or paid donors for over 50%. Only 56 out of 171 countries produce plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMP) through fractionation, with 91 countries reporting all PDMPs being imported. The volume of plasma for fractionation per 1000 population varies significantly between countries ranging from 0.1 to 52.6 litres, with a median of 5.2 litres.
